The poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay combines spiritual intensity with intellectual sophistication in a way that may constitute an almost unimaginable unity or sensibility for present-day readers. Rejected by modernist critics as sentimental in her concerns and old-fashioned in her methods, Millay in fact gave traditional form a new lease on credibility, as she was a master at old forms as well as of flee verse. Perhaps the finest American lyricist of the 20th century, Millay was capable of incorporating a wide-ranging, sophisticated, and philosophically profound kind of thought into her emotional apprehensions.
