The Works of Anne Bradstreet

In her foreword, Adrienne Rich, like many American poets, acknowledges her debt to America`s first poet, whose work is amply represented in this volume. In the 1640s, Bradstreet`s brother-in-law sneaked her first manuscript to a British printer. Entitled THE TENTH MUSE LATELY SPRUNG UP IN AMERICA, Bradstreet`s book, which she never intended for publication, was a huge success. Bradstreet continued writing until her death in 1672, and the posthumously published collection SEVERAL POEMS COMPILED WITH GREAT VARIETY OF WIT AND LEARNING, which reveals both a more private and accomplished voice, was printed in 1978.
